In days long past the traditional method of learning to play the Guitar meant a visit to a private tutor, as was the case with any instrument.

Now far be it for me to knock private tutors, after all I am one of the very same, but in many cases the system falls down. For example, you may have to travel a long way to get your tuition, and you will definitely have to fall in line with the tutors time table.
